At the fair

IMG_3280

Every June a fair descends on the major boulevard of our city. We live a ten-minutes’ bike ride away from this event, but the sounds (or noise if you do not like it) of the attractions are clearly audible in our house. I had never been to the fair and thought I should pay it a visit to see if I could come up with some photos.

Easier said than done. Nevertheless there were some passable pictures and I guess this one fits the Opposites challenge perfectly for a number of reasons.

Amidst all the bustle and loud music of the fair this man is sitting on the bench so very quietly (later on it turns out that he had been waiting patiently for his granddaughter to finish on the Ferris wheel). For him the fair does not seem to hold any interest. Actually he reminds me of the sculpture of Auguste Rodin, The Thinker.

The boys in the background could not be more different. Apart from the fact that they are young, they are excited about what the fair has to offer them and are actively using as many attractions as their money can offer them. They wear colourful clothes while the man is dressed in subdued colours.

In spite of all these differences it looks as if young and old can very well go together. My overall feeling after this visit was that no matter who you were or what you did, everyone fitted in nicely.

  1. What a wonderful photo of opposites and contrast. The man must have been sitting around like that all day waiting for his granddaughter on all the rides 😀 The boys in the background certainly look like they are running around the fair. Maybe they are eager to get on the next ride, or eager to grab a bite. Hope you had a good time at the fair 🙂

  2. Thank you for your comment, Mabel. I am glad you enjoyed the photo and I enjoyed your interpretation of it. Above all, the fair was interesting, looking at all those different people. It was an afternoon especially dedicated to children, so all kinds of acts took place. For example, clowns were fooling around and a woman was making up the kids in various colors. Despite the drizzle, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, except one girl who was afraid high up in the Ferris wheel and cried for her mother!

    • Thank you, Laurie. As a matter of fact I have grown quite fond of this man, he seems so kind and gentle. You had to see him smile, when his granddaughter came running back to him.
